Petroglyphs in the Region

On the way to Cajón de Peña, we came upon Hacienda El Divisadero on the outskirts of El Tuito, owned by renowned restaurateur Tino Carbajal. In addition to delicious food and their own raicilla, assorted activities are offered here. Among them is a tour of the surrounding area that includes a visit to rocks bearing intriguing petroglyphs. These stone carvings were a means of communication between indigenous communities and their gods, a physical manifestation of the rites performed to ask for more rain and a better harvest.

Our curiosity piqued, we did some further research on petroglyphs in our region. To our surprise, we found there are several areas with this type of artifact, including the archaeological zone Piedras Azules, located between Valle de Banderas and San Juan de Abajo; Altavista, an hour and a half north of Puerto Vallarta on Highway 200; Villa Purificacion, in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes; and the small archaeological area in Ixtapa, just outside our city.
