50 Years of the Tequila Denomination of Origin: A Toast to Mexico
This December 9th, 2024 marks a historic milestone: the 50th anniversary of the official recognition of the Tequila Denomination of Origin (DOT), granted in 1974 by the Diario Oficial de la Federación. This key moment established tequila as a symbol of national identity and one of Mexico’s most iconic beverages worldwide.
Since that first step, tequila has not only accompanied the evolution of a constantly transforming Mexico but has also become a benchmark of quality, authenticity, and cultural pride. According to the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), this recognition not only boosted the international market for tequila but also helped shape an agroindustry that has successfully adapted to global challenges and trends.
The Evolution of an Iconic Beverage
In the 1970s, tequila was already recognized as an emblematic product. However, it was during the 1980s and 1990s that the tequila agroindustry experienced remarkable consolidation. The adoption of new production techniques and a focus on diversification elevated tequila to a new level, allowing it to conquer the most discerning palates.
The 2000s ushered in an era of modernization and internationalization. Globalization enabled tequila to reach previously unimaginable corners of the world, bringing with it Mexico’s rich history and culture.
A Protected and Growing Legacy
The role of the CRT has been essential in this process. Through constant oversight, the certification and protection of the Tequila Denomination of Origin have ensured that every bottle upholds a commitment to quality and authenticity. Today, the DOT is protected in 57 countries, positioning tequila as a true gem of Mexican intellectual property.
Current figures reflect the impressive growth of this industry: in 1974, 53 million liters of tequila were produced, while last year that number reached 599 million liters, with 399 million exported to international markets.
Tequila: A Bond That Unites Mexicans
More than just a beverage, tequila is a symbol of unity and celebration. It has been present during the most significant moments in modern Mexican history and continues to be a source of collective pride. Every sip tells a story: of tradition, innovation, and resilience.
Today, we raise our glasses and toast to a product that not only represents Mexico but unites us as a nation. Cheers to tequila and 50 years of excellence!
