Exploring Puerto Vallarta’s South Shore by Water Taxi: An Unmissable Adventure

One of the great privileges of visiting Puerto Vallarta is discovering its beaches located south of the city. And there is no better way to reach them than by boarding a panga or water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán, a picturesque coastal town located just 25 minutes by car from El Centro.

The journey begins precisely there in Boca de Tomatlán, where the Los Horcones River flows into the sea and small boats await near the pier. From this point, you can board a public or private boat that leads to the tranquil southern beaches: Caballo Beach, Las Ánimas Beach, Quimixto, Majahuitas, and Yelapa, among others. Depending on the final destination, the sea voyage can last between 10 and 30 minutes, a journey that completely transforms the beach experience in Puerto Vallarta.

As the panga glides over the Pacific waters, the senses awaken to the natural spectacle: on one side, the imposing Sierra Madre Occidental covers the slopes with dense, vibrant green; on the other, Banderas Bay unfolds with its crystalline waters that acquire surprising turquoise hues, especially on sunny days.

The southern beaches stand out for their authenticity and relaxed atmosphere. Las Ánimas Beach, for example, offers restaurants with tables on the sand, ideal for enjoying fresh seafood and a cold drink. Quimixto, in addition to its serene beach, hides a waterfall that can be reached with a short walk or on horseback. Majahuitas Beach enchants with its exclusive atmosphere, perfect for those seeking total disconnection. And Yelapa, more remote and bohemian, combines beach, river, and a town with an artistic vibe difficult to replicate.

Traveling by water taxi is not just a means of transportation: it is an experience that encapsulates the essence of Puerto Vallarta. The salty breeze, the sound of the engine on the water, and the panoramic views make this journey memorable.

If you are looking for a different activity for your next visit to Puerto Vallarta—or simply wish to escape for a weekend—sailing to the southern beaches should be on your list. It is the most beautiful way to discover that, in this corner of the Mexican Pacific, the journey is as fascinating as the destination.
