On this day (May 31th), Puerto Vallarta celebrates not one, but two very significant anniversaries: its 105th anniversary as a municipality and its 55th anniversary as a city. In this article, the Vallarta Lifestyles editorial team explores Puerto Vallarta’s rich history and its growth as an iconic place.

A bit of history:
In 1918, Puerto Vallarta was officially recognized as a municipality of the state of Jalisco, marking the beginning of its history as a fishing village. However, it was not until the 1960s that the city began to attract the attention of artists, filmmakers and foreign visitors, eventually becoming a tropical paradise.

The tourist boom:
In 1963, John Huston directed The Night of the Iguana in Puerto Vallarta, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. This production was a milestone that put this corner of the Mexican Pacific on the international tourist map. Since then, our destination has experienced a steady growth in hotel infrastructure, world-class restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

Culture and charm:
Puerto Vallarta’s cultural heritage is evident in every corner of the city. The famous Malecón, with its iconic sculptures, offers a stroll full of art and culture. The local markets, such as the Mercado Municipal and the Mercado de Artesanías, are unmissable places to immerse yourself in tradition and purchase unique souvenirs. The local cuisine is also a real treat, with restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood to gourmet dishes.

Sustainable tourism:
Puerto Vallarta is committed to sustainable tourism and environmental protection. The city is proud of its Blue Flag certification, which guarantees the quality of its beaches and its commitment to marine conservation. It also promotes responsible tourism, encouraging activities such as whale watching and the protection of local biodiversity.

Puerto Vallarta is celebrating two historic milestones, with a past rich in tradition and a present full of charm and vitality. Its 105th and 55th anniversaries are the testimony of a tourist destination that has left an indelible mark on the Mexican coast.

Happy anniversary, Puerto Vallarta!
