7th Puerto Vallarta Surfcasting Tournament: A Growing Tradition
On Sunday, May 5th, 2024, Puerto Vallarta will host the seventh edition of the Torneo de Pesca de Orilla Surfcasting Vallarta (Surfcasting Vallarta Tournament), an event that has become a national and international attraction. From 6:00am to 1:00pm, fishing enthusiasts will gather at Los Muertos Beach to compete, socialize and enjoy a day dedicated to this sport.
The tournament was born out of the local fishing community’s desire to promote fishing among young people and to steer the new generations away from excessive technology. Since then it has had a significant impact. Participation has grown year after year, reaching a record 352 competitors, and now attracts participants from all over the Pacific Coast, the Gulf of Mexico and even the United States, Spain and South America.
The tournament follows a “catch and release” format to promote sustainability and respect for the marine ecosystem. This year, the first place winner will take home a prize of 70,000 MXN, the second place winner will receive 20,000 MXN and the third place winner will receive 10,000 MXN. In addition, any species of fish that is not prohibited is eligible for the competition, adding to the excitement of the event. The tournament holds the national record for the heaviest snook caught in land tournaments, with a specimen weighing 11.760 kg.
William Casillas, president of the Surfcasting Vallarta group, emphasizes the tournament’s positive impact on the community: “In addition to promoting a healthy hobby among young people, this tournament is an incentive for out-of-towners and their families to visit us and enjoy all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer.”
The tournament also strives to give back to the community by donating a part of the proceeds to beach and river cleanups throughout the year.
