Discover the New Attraction at El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary
The El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary—nestled between El Quelele, La Cortada and La Vejiga lagoons, alongside the Flamingos Golf Club—is a natural area that has been upgraded with new experiences and attractions for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors in the Riviera Nayarit.
The sanctuary is an Environmental Unit managed by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat by its acronym in Spanish), which is in charge of conservation, environmental education and ecotourism in the area.
The Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau recently announced that a new nocturnal tour called “Night of Legends” has been recently added to the sanctuary’s attractions. This show tells the story of the legend of the crocodile and is performed by one of the most important ceremonial groups in Northeast Mexico: Kalpulli Osteocoatl Chalchitlicue.
The magical evening features a fire show, live music, dancing performances and a special buffet dinner. “Night of Legends” takes place on the last Saturday of every month.
One of the main objectives is to change people’s perspective about crocodiles,” explained biologist Rubén Saavedra, who is in charge of the tours held at El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary. “People say these animals are aggressive and tend to attack, but here we encourage them to understand they are merely defending themselves.”
The sanctuary also features other animals in captivity, including bird and turtle species. With previous reservations guests are able to enjoy meals and night camping.
The El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary is located near Bucerías, a small town just 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. It is open all week—except Wednesdays—from 11:00am – 6:00pm.
