Internationally renowned Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and actress Lila Downs was in Puerto Vallarta this week to film a documentary for Discovery Channel, in which she is promoting our destination, along with other important cultural spots throughout Mexico. This effort was made possible by Puerto Vallarta’s Tourism Bureau (FIDETUR). Titled Naufragantes (or shipwrecked), the series will feature 13 episodes filmed in different cities throughout Mexico, showcasing their attractions, folklore, gastronomy and other cultural aspects. When completed, it will be broadcast throughout Latin America through Discovery Channel’s network, and it is expected to air before year’s end.

During her visit, the artist explored the Malecón, Isla Rio Cuale and enjoyed our city’s impressive public sculpture collection. In addition, she visited Las Caletas in the South Shore and enjoyed Puerto Vallarta’s rich culinary diversity at some local restaurants and other eateries.

Born in Oaxaca in 1968, Lila Downs performs her own compositions and taps into Mexican traditional and popular music, even recording in indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha. Through her activism she has gone through great lengths to preserve these languages.

Lila Downs is recognized for her flamboyant, diverse and outré contributions to the music industry through her traditional and authentic fashion, the majority of which are based around Mexico’s indigenous peoples’ styles, cultures and heritages, which show through her performances and music videos. Her achievements include one Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammy Awards.

If you wish to get acquainted with her music, here are a few choice songs to consider:
