The Masts that Transform the Puerto Vallarta Skyline
If you have walked by the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Terminal during the last few days, you may have noticed the presence of the impressive three masted Bermuda rigged schooner. It is the super-yacht Eos, the largest private sailing yacht in the world.
The stunning and elegant blue wooden vessel Eos is owned by media mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg. The mega-yacht was launched in 2006 from the Lürssen yard in Germany, designed by prestigious yacht designer Bill Langan and the sailing rigs being supplied by Rondal/Huisman
Its overall length measures 304 feet (92m), making it the largest in the world and the 200 feet (61m) masts are “the maximum height allowed to enable the craft to pass underneath bridges cross the globe”, according to the The Telegraph.
The schooner combines a perfect blend of old and new charm and has a sophisticated navigation system, two back-up engines worth an estimated $1 million USD and a luxurious but restrained interior. An article by Harper’s Bazaar in 2007 mentioned that Eos features a figurehead of von Fürstenberg sculpted by Anh Duong. Celebrities like Elle Macpherson and Madonna, among others, have been spotted enjoying the luxurious amenities of this mega-yacht.
The yacht is named after the Greek Goddess Eos, who was a Titaness and the goddess of dawn, who rose each morning from her home at the edge of the Ocean. As if the myth was true, the titan Eos and its beams have risen during the last few days to salute the vast water of Banderas Bay and make an leave a mark on the Puerto Vallarta Skyline.
