The Legend of Mexcaltitlán: The Island that Gave Birth to a Country
In Riviera Nayarit, among its mangroves and serene waters, lies the Island of Mexcaltitlán, a magical place that sparks the imagination and transports us to ancient times. This small island, known as the “Home of the Mexicans,” holds a legend intertwined with the history of Aztlán, the mythical place of origin of the Nahuatlacas.
The Myth of Aztlán
According to tradition, Aztlán was the city from which the Nahuatlaca tribes departed, guided by the god Huitzilopochtli, to found the grand city of Tenochtitlán. Mexcaltitlán, with its colorful streets and rich cultural heritage, seems to be the last vestige of that legendary place.
The Herons and the Structure of the City
The most solid theory suggests that Mexcaltitlán is the true Aztlán. The name “Aztlán” means “Place of the Herons,” and these birds still abound in the local fauna. Additionally, many years ago, a stone engraving was found on the island depicting a heron devouring a snake, a very powerful symbol connected to the legend.
The structure of Mexcaltitlán also resembles ancient Tenochtitlán. Both cities were founded on islets in bodies of water (in the case of Tenochtitlán, Lake Texcoco).
The Museum of Origin
To immerse yourself in this fascinating story, you can visit the Museum of Origin in Mexcaltitlán. Here you will find six exhibition rooms exploring the region’s ecological environment, as well as community life, fauna, and flora. You can also admire examples of ceramics and codices related to the island’s foundation. The museum is located in an old building constructed in 1815 with battlements for defense, and reaching it by boat is part of the adventure.
The “Mexican Venice” and Biodiversity
During the rainy season, Mexcaltitlán transforms into the “Mexican Venice.” The streets flood, and tours are conducted by boat to explore every corner of this paradise. Surrounded by lush mangroves and home to various birds, the island offers a unique experience for visitors.
A National Treasure
Mexcaltitlán is not only a historical and cultural treasure but also a living reminder of our Mexican identity. Every view, every story told in its streets, connects us with our past and invites us to discover the origin of our nation.
