Construction of the new Guadalajara – Puerto Vallarta highway began four years ago and continues advancing at a steady pace. When completed (December 2017, according to the latest estimates), travel time from Guadalajara to Bucerias is expected to be two and a half hours, or approximately half the time it takes to to make the trip today.
Many look forward to the shorter travel times between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, along with the economic benefits this will bring to our destination. Among them, in increase in weekend visitors from Guadalajara and other nearby cities, and an increase in real estate vacation home purchases, for example. At the same time, however, there are concerns of potential traffic bottlenecks in and south of Bucerias, where roads have a lower capacity to handle the increased vehicular traffic that is expected. In El Centro, Puerto Vallarta has yet to implement a more efficient public transportation model that will meet the needs of the local population and present tourism levels.
