Ximena Jacobo, Sonia Cruz, and Elizabeth Casillas exemplify how the natural richness of our destination inspires residents to lead active, purposeful lives. From paddleboarding on the tranquil waters of the Mismaloya to cycling along the iconic Malecón and hiking scenic mountain trails, these women have not only embraced their surroundings, but have made them an integral part of their personal and social well-being.

Ximena Jacobo
The Sea as a Wellness Therapy

“Paddleboarding is an activity that helps you connect with yourself and nature, while also being an excellent workout. And, well, living in Puerto Vallarta, who doesn’t love the sea?” —Ximena Jacobo.

For Ximena Jacobo, the sea is not just a backdrop, but the central axis of her lifestyle. A resident of Mismaloya, Ximena seamlessly balances her role as a mother and housewife with a deep connection to the sea, particularly through paddleboarding. This water sport has not only kept her active, but has also become a source of unforgettable moments with her five-year-old son, who already shares her love of the sea.

“I’ve been taking my son on the board since he was six months old. Now he enjoys the sea as much as I do: he watches the fish and as soon as we reach the beach, he jumps in without hesitation,” Ximena says with a smile.

Living just steps from Mismaloya Beach, her day starts early, taking advantage of the morning calm to paddle alone or with friends, depending on her family’s schedule. Ximena fondly recalls encounters with manta rays and turtles gliding beneath her board, moments that remind her of the magic of living in paradise.

“The natural environment of Puerto Vallarta makes everything unique. Being out on the ocean connects you, relaxes you and frees you from stress. Paddleboarding is like hitting the reset button on your soul; you return home with an indescribable peace,” she affirms.

Sonia Cruz
The Malecón as a Link to the Destination

“To the rhythm of my bike, I strive to live each moment fully, whether on the Malecón or elsewhere. It reminds me that true luxury lies in appreciating and enjoying the wonders of everyday life.” —Sonia Cruz.

With an active lifestyle and a focus on balancing personal and professional commitments, Sonia Cruz—a destination promoter and digital content creator—finds cycling the perfect way to reconnect with herself and her surroundings.

“For me, cycling is synonymous with happiness. It’s a time to enjoy the sunrise, the sea and the people I meet. Every day is an opportunity to appreciate something new,” she shares.

Her favorite route starts on the bike path along Francisco Medina Ascencio Ave., which connects her home in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood to the Malecón. From there, she pedals towards the Los Muertos Pier, stopping several times to capture the beauty of nature with her camera or simply take in the sea views. “It is incredible how the environment of Puerto Vallarta changes the experience. I’ve seen turtles nesting, manta rays jumping and humpback whales playing around. This place offers a magic you won’t find anywhere else.”

But our destination is much more than just the Malecón, so Sonia has already ventured into the mountain trails, exploring routes to El Jorullo and Playa Grande. These trails combine nature and sport, offering her a different kind of adventure.

Elizabeth Casillas
The Mountains as a Path to Freedom

“With each new trail, I reaffirm my passion for discovery and my respect for nature. Whether on the paths by the sea or in the cool mountains of San Sebastián del Oeste, connecting with the environment transforms my spirit.” —Elizabeth Casillas.

For Elizabeth Casillas, living in Bahía de Banderas means more than just a change of residence. Originally from Mexico City and now based in Bucerías, Nayarit, Ely (as she is affectionately known) has made hiking a cornerstone of her lifestyle. In addition to being a mother and working in customer service at a restaurant in Punta de Mita, she uses her free time to explore the region’s diverse natural environments.

“I’ve always loved exercise, but hiking gives me something different: it’s physical and mental therapy,” she explains. Since moving to the bay in 2021, she has hiked some of the area’s most iconic trails, such as Cerro del Mono and the Boca de Tomatlán-Las Ánimas route. These experiences not only deepen her connection with nature, but also allow her to share meaningful moments with her daughter and closest friends.

Ely emphasizes how the natural richness of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit enhances the hiking experience. “We have it all here: beaches, jungle and even forests nearby. Every trail offers something unique. A visit to the Palo María Waterfall is unforgettable—the journey takes you deep into the jungle and the reward is a refreshing dip at the end,” she shares enthusiastically.

Ely also encourages others to try hiking: “All you need for a recreational hike is comfortable sneakers and to bring water, fruit or a snack. Go for a walk—it’s free,” she concludes.
