This holiday season, Puerto Vallarta will unveil a newly renovated version of its beloved Malecón promenade, one of the city’s most emblematic attractions. The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board has released renderings of the project, revealing a modernized and revitalized waterfront designed to enhance the experience for both locals and visitors.

The renovation—which is set for completion before December 2025, just in time for the city’s busiest cultural and commercial season—reflects Puerto Vallarta’s ongoing evolution as a world-class destination. The new Malecón will combine functionality and beauty, offering an inviting and sustainable space that mirrors the spirit and warmth of this Pacific paradise.

KEY IMPROVEMENTS ALONG THE MALECÓN

The renovation includes from cosmetic changes to infrastructure improvements. Among the most notable are new urban amenities, such as expanded seating areas, new planters, and enhanced lighting, all designed to create a more welcoming environment for evening strolls and ocean viewing.

To ensure comfort and safety, the city will replace worn paving stones and restore benches, while the electrical systems will be rewired to support modern public needs. The introduction of an automated irrigation system will also maintain lush greenery throughout the promenade, ensuring sustainability and year-round visual appeal. In addition, several structures along the Malecón will receive a fresh coat of paint, giving the entire area a renewed and vibrant aesthetic.

EXPANSION TO THE NORTH

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the expansion of the Malecón’s northern section, which will extend from 31 de Octubre Street to Argentina Street, reaching Parque Hidalgo in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. Construction for this phase is scheduled to begin in late October 2025.

This northern extension will not only add new walking paths, public seating, and green areas, but will also strengthen the connection between different parts of the city. By linking downtown with the 5 de Diciembre district, the project aims to create a more integrated and accessible urban experience—one that invites both residents and tourists to explore more of Puerto Vallarta’s cultural and natural attractions.

A BOOST FOR LOCAL TOURISM AND ECONOMY

As one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic landmarks, the Malecón draws millions of visitors annually who come to admire its ocean views, sculptures, and vibrant atmosphere. The upcoming renovation is expected to further boost tourism and provide local businesses—restaurants, cafés, galleries, and shops—with increased visibility and economic opportunity.

By investing in this major public space, the city reinforces its commitment to sustainable tourism and long-term growth. A cleaner, more comfortable, and more environmentally conscious Malecón will not only improve the daily lives of Vallartenses but also enhance the experience of travelers who visit from around the world.
