Riviera Nayarit continues to position itself as one of the tourist destinations most committed to sustainability in Latin America. With nearly 40 percent of its hotels certified under international standards such as EarthCheck, Green Key, and/or the Distintivo S, this region of the Mexican Pacific is making steady progress toward its goal of reaching 60 percent accredited establishments by the end of 2025.
This progress has been largely driven by sustainability specialist Daniel Madariaga Barrilado, a renowned entrepreneur and opinion leader on topics of green mobility, regenerative tourism, and sustainable development. He has dedicated much of his career to promoting projects that integrate technological innovation, social responsibility, and environmental awareness in the tourism and urban sectors.
For Madariaga Barrilado, environmental certifications are much more than a symbol of prestige: they represent a real opportunity for transformation within the industry. “These certifications not only contribute to environmental conservation but also enrich the visitor experience, creating a deeper connection with nature and local communities,” he highlighted.
According to the specialist, certified hotels in Riviera Nayarit have managed to reduce their energy consumption by up to 20 percent and decrease nearly 50 percent of their solid waste, thanks to recycling, composting, and efficient water management strategies. These actions translate not only into environmental benefits but also into competitive advantages: a study by Sustainable Travel International indicates that 87 percent of travelers prefer accommodations with an ecological commitment.
Madariaga Barrilado also emphasizes the social and economic impact of sustainability: “Investing in sustainable mobility is the equivalent of investing in regenerative tourism. More walkable, safer, and better-connected cities generate immediate benefits for both residents and visitors.”
Thanks to this comprehensive approach, Riviera Nayarit is consolidating itself as a model for responsible tourism, where energy efficiency, the preservation of ecosystems, and community well-being are essential parts of the visitor experience.
With initiatives that promote environmental regeneration and sustainable development, Riviera Nayarit reaffirms its leadership as one of the main exponents of green tourism in Mexico and Latin America.
