Puerto Vallarta is gearing up to celebrate Day of the Dead with one of its most emblematic expressions: the Monumental Catrina (Catrina Monumental), an imposing figure that transforms the Malecón each year into a stage for Mexican tradition, art, and culture. On this occasion, the installation will pay tribute to Frida Kahlo with an 82-foot-tall design rising against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

The unveiling is scheduled for November 1st at 7:00pm at the Malecón Lighthouse (Faro del Malecón). From this vantage point, the monumental creation will become one of the festival’s primary highlights, merging the symbolism of the Catrina with the visual richness of one of Mexico’s most iconic celebrations.

Its craftsmanship is equally remarkable for its scale and artisan technique. Nearly 7,000 square feet of fabric will be used to tailor the figure’s dress, crafted by a dedicated team of 22 specialists, artists, and artisans working on every detail to bring the piece to life.

The surrounding setting will be complemented by other large-scale installations enhancing the promenade, including a 39-foot-long whale, a 29-foot-tall dog, an altar featuring giant pan de muerto and votive candles, and nine floral crosses. Together, these elements will create a space where art and traditional motifs invite visitors to honor the memory of those who remain ever-present in the hearts of loved ones.

A CULTURAL CORRIDOR BY THE SEA
The Monumental Catrina will be part of a broader itinerary offering 28 free experiences from October 31st to November 2nd as part of the Festival de las Almas (Festival of Souls). During these dates, the Malecón and Historic Downtown will transform into a cultural corridor featuring seaside altars (ofrendas), flower-covered skiffs (pangas), and a sunset candle-lighting ritual.

The schedule will include cultural and artistic events celebrating Mexican heritage through live music, stage performances, culinary offerings, and colorful activities. Through this program, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to experience a celebration that blends national identity with Puerto Vallarta’s coastal setting.
